George Ledbetter, age 72, is riding his bicycle across America (again)
about 2,300 miles - This time to raise money for ChildHelp USA.
Last day of my ride from Vancouver, BC to Mexico!

Today is the day for me to conclude my ride to Tijuana, Mexico. I drove to Chula Vista, parked the Jeep in a parking lot. Inflated my tires, filled my camelback with water. Stopped in the information center and picked up a bicycle map of the area and started riding towards Tijuana.

Once again the weather was perfect. The traffic wasn’t to heavy and the shoulders of the road were designed to accommodate bicycle riders. Following the bicycle map took me into the residential area of Chula Vista and then back on Broadway South of the main business district.

Twenty two miles later I arrived at the border. My Good Samaritan for the day Christene is a doctor that participates in the Doctors without borders. We met and talked about a variety of subjects related to health, overweight, and the general poor health of people in North America and Mexico. Christene is a cardiac doc and sees first hand the results of poor nutrition, lack of exercise and an attitude of “so what”.

Christina works in Mexico and is familiar with the area. I mentioned that I neglected to bring my passport with me and her if my drivers license was sufficient. She went to the fence and hailed a Border Patrol Agent, told him about my ride from Canada and asked if my driver license would be sufficient for me to get back into the US. He stated “it depends on the agent you talk to, some will let you through with a driver license and others will not.”

My initial thought was to turn around and say I made it 12 inches from Mexico. I said good by to Christina gave her my card and started riding back to Chula Vista. I saw a City Police Officer sitting in a squad car. I posed the same question to him and he said “yes” a drivers licenses of a US Citizen is sufficient to get back into the country”.

I thanked him. Turned around and rode along the bicycle trail and was in Tijuana, Mexico within two to three minutes. I located a ramp that went over the highway into Mexico and got in line with hundreds of other people and one hour and forty five minutes later I made it back to the US. There was no problems using my drivers license.

I got on my bicycle and rode back to Chula Vista, found the Mexican Grill, locked my bicycle to a post and went into the bar ordered a dos XX beer, and lunch. I felt great because I made it to Mexico and I also felt a little sad because my bicycle riding adventure was over!

Miles for day: 22

Good Samaritan of the Day: Christina - Thank you!!

These Bike Route Signs guided all of us down the Coastal Highway to our destination.

Christene is my Good Samaritan of the day because she talked to a Border Patrol Agent about getting me into Mexico without my passport. Actually the primary reason Christene is my choice as Good Sama
