George Ledbetter, age 72, is riding his bicycle across America (again)
about 2,300 miles - This time to raise money for ChildHelp USA.
An ode to Highway 1

My ride today extended from Lom Poc to 3 miles North of Santa Barbara, CA. The weather is ideal for riding and the coastal route continues to be extraordinarily beautiful. However the designated bicycle route Highway 1 becomes somewhat of a joke.

There are stretches of Highway 1 that is open for bicycle riding and section that are not open to bicycles. At these sections the route takes you around, over and under Highway 1 and the surface of the road is not as good to ride on. Oh well, that is what it is.

I made arrangements to meet with Lynn and Nathan friends from Ventura. They live on their boat in a beautiful Marina situated in a harbor between the mainland and the Pacific Ocean. There are several restaurants situated near their boat. Nathan was working on a project on their boat.

We lived on a 46 foot sailboat in the Pacific Northwest for approximately 9 years and know about living in a “mariner” community. it was a unique life style that I enjoyed very much. Lynn told me there 50 % of the boats in their Marina are live aboard. They love their life style and the location of the Marina.

Finding a place to park for the night became a major problem because all of the State Parks were filled to capacity so i selected a motel to spend the night. My preference is to camp in a State Park. There is a much better opportunity to meet other cyclists on the road.

Mario of Motel6 in Ventura is my Good Samaritan of the day. He went out of his way to help me with a project and he also let me park my Jeep in the shade of a palm while riding during the day.

Cecily and Leland, on the left spent 29 years building their sloop and are going on their initial voyage with friends. It is exciting to meet people that are following their dreams.

I met these two delightful women walking from San Mateo to Santa Monica, California. We met several times during our journey. Unfortunately the card with their names ended up in th ewashing machine.

Looking South from the same location.
