George Ledbetter, age 72, is riding his bicycle across America (again)
about 2,300 miles - This time to raise money for ChildHelp USA.
Guadeloupe to River Park

My route today wound through rich farm land through Guadeloupe , CA terminating at River Park in Lompoc, CA. With a side trip through Bueltown and ending in Solvang, CA a Danish community. architecture in Solvang is reminiscent of our trip to Copenhagen, Denmark.

I rode back with Richard, a retired Air Force cyclist from Lompoc. Richard informed me that Lompoc is the “seed growing capital” of the US. He also indicated that there have been several new grape orchards planted in the area with a few new wineries opening up.

My Good Samaritans for the day are Bob and Rosemary, hosts of the River Park Campground. When Bob heard about my bicycle ride for ChildHelp he found me a camping spot even though they were “full”. It is a pleasant experience to have people voluntarily help me out on my ride because of the good work ChildHelp provides abused children.

I met two extremely interesting nd adventurous people at the River Park Campground. Peter and Diane of Norway camped next to me. They are on a five years into a seven year ride that has covered more then, 50,000 miles.

These two toured Europe, India, Vietnam, New Zealand, Australia, and boarded a ship bound for South America. They rode up South America through Mexico into California and they were on their way to Canada, and then up the Alcan Highway to Alaska.

They were so interesting to talk to about their adventure which will continue until September of 2007. Peter retired from the railroad as an engineer. Peter trained new engineers prior to his retirement and Diane trained students in the fine art of physical education.

They are two adventuresome people that i felt fortunate to have met. I enjoy riding my bicycle, however meeting people like Bob, Rosemary, Peter, and Diane are the most enjoyable element of riding on a long distance trip.
