Beautiful Eureka

July 11th 2006

Started my ride to Eureka about 8:am. It was a beautiful day for riding with the temperatures in the mid 60 degrees. The wind was mild and the road conditions were perfect for riding

Even the topography was cooperating! The hills were not to steep, or to frequent, wide shoulders to ride on and at that time of the day the traffic was nor heavy. One could say that it was too good to be true.

I was cruising along about 18 miles per hour and 36 miles into the ride when there was an audible “twang” sound from the road. Then my bicycle started feeling “different” and a little unstable. I stopped and checked out the wheels to discover that the rear wheel was out of round. Upon further inspection found out that the hub where the spokes connect was fractured.

One of the connecting bands to the hub had separated relieving tension from the wheel causing the wheel to be out of round. There is no way to salvage the wheel. I called Marty, the pit crewman who drove out and picked me up. We stopped at a bicycle shop on Broadway in Eureka and found out they did not have a rear wheel that would fit my bike.

They gave us the name and address of another bicycle shop in town. We drove to Henderson Bicycle Shop and talked to Will. As luck would have it Will had the solution for my problems. He replaced both the front and rear wheels in about 45 minutes and we were on our way to the Costco parking lot to spend the night.

We decided to check out their work and went for a ride around Eureka and had a great time viewing Old Town and some beautiful buildings. I highly recommend you take a trip to Northern California to see the architecture of Eureka.

A few dollars out of my wallet and the bicycle is back in good working condition ready to take me to Mexico.
