July 9 - day of rest.
July 10
We made a decision to drive to a California State Park which was
about 100 miles South of Crescent City. It seemed to be the best choice because other camp sites along our route had limited sites for Wally.
I rode South on Highway 101 to a spot on the map called Piercy, which turned out to be a spot on the ground as well. I anticipated that it would be a small and it may have been at some point in history.
However at this point in time it is just an intersection to enable locals access to the freeway system.
There were many, many short steep hills on this ride. I worked hard on this ride and was weary and ready for a shower and recovery time after my ride today. We parked Wally at a site in Burlington
Campground in the heart of the National Redwood Forest. The site was quiet with these majestic redwood trees all around us, more appropriately to say “above us.”
We learned about a man by the name of Kellogg that was a scientist with unusual vocal abilities. He had the vocal capability to reach reach 11 1/2 to 12 octaves. He taught himself to mimic birds and other wild animals in the Redwood forest where he grew up.
His vocal cords were an anomaly and he used his rare vocal capabilities to mimic birds for studios. If my memory serves me
well he performed all of the bird sounds in Disney Snow White, and man other films.
Another feat that he did was to extinguish a fire in a laboratory in
Berkley using radio signals. His range was so great that he could reproduce sounds that were beyond the human capabilities to hear.
He also made a “redwood wagon out of a single tree” placed it on a frame that could handle the weight and toured around the United States seeking support to save the redwood forest.
An amazing man in many respects. His efforts helped the Government establish the National Redwood Parks that we have today.

Good Samaritan of the Day: - Thank you!!

A 72 year old 5 foot 11inch guy (me) standing next to a redwood that is probably 1000 years old and 200 foot tall! Keeps everything in perspective.

The road leading to Burlington Camp Grounds......Beautiful!

If you are riding to see Piercy? There are nice farm lands and mountain ranges but no visible Piercy!
