HumBug State Park

July 6, 2006

Started my ride at Bullards State Park and rode 43 miles to Port Orford, Oregon. My ride terminated at HumBug State Park where we will spend the night departing early in the morning for the California border.

I met three Good Samaritans today Laurie and Chris of the Brass Rose in Bandon, Oregon. Laurie and Chris gave me directions to ride along a scenic route in Bandon ending up on Highway 101 South. I thoroughly enjoyed taking a side route through scenic Bandon. One section of the ride was along the Ocean with views of surf and sea.

It started raining about 20 miles into the ride however it was not a hard rain more like a spring rain with the wind blowing from the North. I stopped in the Port Orford Grill for a cup of coffee and a brownie and had the pleasure of meeting the cook June. June was originally from Arizona and managed to migrate to Port Orford a few months ago. I mentioned ChildHelp to June and she informed me she would make a contribution to ChildHelp. So i nominated June for another Good Samaritan encounter.

I had a flat tire on a hill heading South on Highway 101 jut outside of the town of Port Orford City limits. I repaired the flat and rode my bicycle to our camp site at HumBug Mountain State Park. I fixed the flat and got on my bicycle and rode to the entrance of the park, headed South and had another flat. The good news is Marty Plocher, my pit crew, pointed out to me that the tire patch I had placed on the leak needed to be replaced. It had to be removed and new patch placed on the punctures and to the best of my knowledge the leak is fixed.

We are approximately 80 miles from the California border and should make the crossing from Oregon to California the day after tomorrow. Yeah! Two states and one country to go to reach Mexico.
