Started at Hebgen Lake, MT. No altitude reading available. A most difficult ride. There was a strong head wind between 35 to 45 mph. Some gusts were greater. The maximum speed I could attain on some of the down hill runs was 8 mph. The first half of the ride was in the Gallatin Forest area along side the Madison River. According to the Earthquake Area Visitor Information Center, the Madison is the fourth finest river in the world for trout fishing. It was a natural high to ride by the men and women fly fishing and to see their sense of serenity and pleasure with what they were doing. The second half of the ride was in the high plateau farmlands. The herds of horses along with the cows, steers, antelope and sheep were my distraction from the wind in my face. Sue found the Earthquake Area VIC very interesting. We had been observing the devastation along our ride for the past two days and we weren't quite certain about the details. It occurred in 1959. It completely changed the geography of the area. Tilted Hebgen Lake by 19 feet and created a new lake, Earthquake Lake. Hebgen Dam held tight and the quick work of the Army Corp of Engineers creating a spillway out of Earthquake Lake saved many lives and property. One human interest story was about a woman in her seventies who was enjoying the peace of a beautiful night in her lodge, opened her door to see what the noise was about and found a five foot crevice between her and her entry. The lodge dropped into the water. She jumped to safety. Incredibly, as nature would play with us there was an earthquake tonight. Sue and I were sitting in our RV and sensed some rolling and rattleing. Sue knew immediately what was occurring. I passed it off to the wind. The next morning it was headlines in the paper and the talk of Ennis. |
